The trip begins in Tokyo, where travelers stay for three nights. The first full day will be a private tour of the city with a local guide, traveling by public transportation as the Tokyo locals do, in order to give travelers a real feel for Japan?s capital. The day tour can include the following tourist attractions: Asakusa?s Sensoji temple, a Sumida-gawa river boat cruise, Hama-rikyu gardens, shopping in Harajuku, Meiji Shrine and the bright lights of Shinjuku. Following a full day of guided tours, travelers will have the opportunity to explore Tokyo on their own.
The next part of the itinerary takes travelers to the alpine city of Matsumoto, a remote section of the Japan Alps. The city is very famous for Matsumotojo, one of Japan?s original castles, but is also known for it?s sake breweries, museums, traditional buildings, and delicious soba noodles. The journey then moves further into the Alps to the quaint town of Tsumago, located in the scenic Kiso Valley, where cars are prohibited from the main roads during the day and power lines are hidden to allow visitors to feel like they are visiting an earlier time. Travelers can enjoy a tour of Kiso Valley, walking between the villages of Tsumago and Magome. Waterfalls, stone paths, mountain views, and small villages are just some of the highlights of this walking tour.
After three days in the Alps, travelers depart for Kyoto, where they?ll stay in a restored machiya, or traditional Kyoto townhouse. The cottage is a short walk from Tofukuji Station, which is one stop from Kyoto main station. The itinerary includes a private tour of Kyoto with a local guide, who will take travelers to some of the popular tourist attractions as well as to some of the lesser known highlights of Kyoto. The last day will include a private cycling tour of Kyoto. The half day tour visits Miyagawacho and Gion Geisha districts, the old streets around the Shirakawa River and the Kyoto Imperial Palace Park.
